Ever thought of creating a library with thousands of free books? You'd never have to spend a dime. It sounds impossible, but it's not! Free books, on nearly any subject you can think of, are all over the web, ready to be read, downloaded, and shared. All you need to do is speed up your reading so you have enough time to get through all of them!
A huge quantity of books previously unavailable to the public were released starting in 2019 to the public domain, thanks to the Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act of 1998. Because of an amendment to that act, works published between 1923 and 1977 can enter the public domain 95 years after their creation.
Many of the sites listed in this article can get you access to the tens of thousands of books (and movies, songs, and cartoons) available under this act. Downloads should be free and without retribution under U.S. copyright law. Keep an eye on your favorite sites; they will update regularly with these now legal-to-download books.
Here are the top 20 sites where you can find and download a wide variety of completely free books online, anything from romance novels to computer technology manuals.

Read Print is an online library where you can find thousands of free books to read. The books are classics or Creative Commons licensed and include everything from nonfiction and essays to fiction, plays, and poetry.
Free registration at Read Print gives you the ability to track what you've read and what you would like to read, write reviews of books you have read, add books to your favorites, and to join online book clubs or discussion lists to discuss great works of literature.
You can access the books on Read Print without joining, however, you won't have access to the other features mentioned above.
Finding Free Books On Read Print's Website
There are several ways you can find what you're looking for at Read Print:
- A keyword search for book titles, authors, or quotes.
- Search by type of work published; i.e., essays, fiction, non-fiction, plays, etc.
- View the top books to read online as per the Read Print community.

Once you've found a book you're interested in, click Read Online and the book will open within your web browser. You also have the option to Launch Reading Mode if you're not fond of the website interface. Reading Mode looks like an open book, however, all the free books on the Read Print site are divided by chapter so you'll have to go back and open it every time you start a new chapter.
If you find a free book you really like and you'd like to download it to your mobile e-reader, Read Print provides links to Amazon, where the book can be downloaded. However, when downloading books from Amazon, you may have to pay for the book unless you're a member of Amazon Kindle Unlimited.

How Do I find Free Books to Read Here?
Authorama is a very simple site to use. You can scroll down the list of alphabetically arranged authors on the front page, or check out the list of Latest Additions at the top.

Having a free audiobook in the car for when you run errands, on your phone when you're traveling, or on your computer to enjoy while you work, can keep you sane and add some fun and interest to your day.
These websites offer completely free audiobooks for you to download and listen to whenever you want. You won't find any samples here — at these websites, you'll be able to download complete audio books.
The free audio book downloads below are all legal. They are either public domain or the websites have permission from the author to offer the audio book for free.
Most of the time you'll be downloading these books as MP3 files (or sometimes WMA or AAC files) that can play on your computer, tablet, phone, iPod, or MP3 player. There are free audio converter tools you can use if you need the audiobook to be in a different file format.
Looking for more free books in other formats? Download free books for your Kindle, free children's Kindle books, free romance ebooks, or free Nook books. Also read our guide to finding free ebooks.
There are lots of websites aside from the ones below that offer free audio books that you can download through torrent websites. However, you should know that while that method of sharing audio ebooks and other digital files (e.g., movies, software, music) may seem completely fine, it's normally illegal in most countries and is typically considered an unsafe method for sharing files since it's a common way to transmit malware.

Scribl is a very different audio book website because while there are some free audio books, most of them come at a cost. It's really a hit or miss type of situation when you look for free audio ebooks here.
However, we've included it here because you might find unique books that aren't free anywhere else. Just make sure to grab them quickly because as books get more popular, Scribl puts a price on them.
Because Scribl has other things, too, like ebooks and podcasts, you want to make sure to filter the results to only show audio books.

Free audio books at Spotify? Yes! With a catch: it's only free to download the books if you're a paying user. Spotify memberships allow for downloading content while free users can only stream the books.
The free audio books at Spotify are not organized very well because Spotify is a music streaming service, not an audio book website — but there is a good handful of them available.
If the link below doesn't have the audiobook you want, try doing a general search for audiobooks on Spotify. Use these Spotify search tips if you need help.
YouTube
What We Like
Any audiobook you find is free to stream
No user account is needed to view or download audiobooks
Also has lots of free music and videos
What We Don't Like
Doesn't provide a built-in way for finding audiobooks
Most audiobooks don't have a download link
Similar to Spotify, YouTube is not primarily a good source for audiobooks because most of the content is music and videos. However, you might have luck finding some really great free audio books on YouTube if you know how to search for them.
If you can't find an audio book on YouTube by searching for its name followed by 'audiobook' (e.g., the six pillars of self esteem audiobook), you can try Reddit. The /r/audiobooksonyoutube sub is built specifically for sharing which videos on YouTube are actually audiobooks.
Once you find an audiobook you like, and so long as you know it's public domain or is legal to download, you can download just the audio from the video with a YouTube to MP3 converter.
